A private key is a long alphanumeric code that acts similarly to a password. Wallet programs which run in difficult-to-secure environments, such as webservers, can be designed to distribute public keys including P2PKH or P2SH addresses and nothing more. When the hardened private derivation function is used, the resulting child private key and chain code are completely different from what would result from the normal derivation function. In both cases, one of the risks of using a single fixed address rather than a separate dynamic address per donor is that a thief might be able to infiltrate your website and replace it with his own address, thereby diverting donations to himself.
